AN ACT

Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated

Statutes, in other required equipment, further providing for

3

exhaust systems, mufflers and noise control.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

5

hereby enacts as follows:

Section 1.  Section 4523(c) and (d) of Title 75 of the

7

Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes are amended to read:

8

§ 4523.  Exhaust systems, mufflers and noise control.

(c)  Mufflers and related equipment.--Every motor vehicle

11

shall be equipped with a [muffler] factory-installed muffler, a

12

muffler meeting factory specifications or other effective noise

13

suppressing system in good working order [and], in constant

14

operation and [no] in compliance with the maximum noise levels

15

permitted under subsection (a). No muffler or exhaust system

16

shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device.

17

(d)  Unauthorized modification of equipment.--No person shall

18

modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which

will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the

2

vehicle above the maximum levels permitted under subsection (a)

3

or violate the provisions of subsection (b) or (c). Headers and

4

side exhausts are permitted provided the vehicle meets all the

5

requirements of this section.

Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
