| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring Joyce A. Bender, the CEO and founder of Bender |
2 | Consulting Services, Inc., for her service to the epilepsy |
3 | movement and the disabled community, for her service as the |
4 | Chair of the National Epilepsy Foundation Board of Directors |
5 | and as the recipient of the 2011 Hero of Epilepsy Award. |
6 | WHEREAS, Joyce A. Bender is one of the estimated 206,000 |
7 | Pennsylvanians living with epilepsy and seizures; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Joyce A. Bender has dedicated countless and selfless |
9 | hours of service to the Epilepsy Foundation and the disability |
10 | movement; and |
11 | WHEREAS, May 21, 2011, marks the end of Joyce A. Bender's |
12 | two-year term as the Chair of the National Epilepsy Foundation |
13 | Board of Directors; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Joyce A. Bender has provided fearless leadership to |
15 | the mission of the Epilepsy Foundation, which is to lead the |
16 | fight to stop seizures, find a cure and overcome the challenges |

1 | created by epilepsy; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Joyce A. Bender has provided many years of support |
3 | and service to the Epilepsy Foundation of Western/Central |
4 | Pennsylvania through service on its board of directors; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The prevention and control of epilepsy can be |
6 | achieved through community education and awareness programs; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Commonwealth has supported the creation and |
8 | expansion of local epilepsy support services and awareness |
9 | programs through Federal and State appropriations; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Joyce A. Bender is the recipient of the 2011 Hero of |
11 | Epilepsy Award for her work as an advocate, not only for people |
12 | living with epilepsy but for all people living with |
13 | disabilities, consulting with all levels of government and |
14 | industry to ensure that people with disabilities are treated |
15 | fairly and have every opportunity to achieve competitive |
16 | employment; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Joyce A. Bender is particularly involved in |
18 | encouraging young advocates who themselves have a variety of |
19 | disabilities, including epilepsy; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Joyce A. Bender was selected as the President's |
21 | Award winner by President Bill Clinton in 1999 and received the |
22 | 2003 New Freedom Initiative Award presented by President George |
23 | W. Bush; therefore be it |
24 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June |
25 | 14, 2011, as "Joyce A. Bender Day" in Pennsylvania to assist her |
26 | in her efforts to increase awareness of epilepsy and the needs |
27 | of Pennsylvanians who have epilepsy and seizures; and be it |
28 | further |
29 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to |
30 | Joyce A. Bender, 419 Poplar Court, Moon Township, PA 15108. |
