A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the week of May 9 through 15, 2010, as "Armed Forces

2

Week" in Pennsylvania and encouraging the observance of May

3

15, 2010, as "Armed Forces Day" in Pennsylvania.

4

WHEREAS, "Armed Forces Day," since it was established by

5

President Harry S. Truman in 1949, is annually celebrated on the

6

third Saturday of May as part of "Armed Forces Week," which runs

7

from the second Saturday to the third Sunday of the month; and

8

WHEREAS, With pride in our nation's military strength and

9

successes, we acknowledge the members of our Army, Navy, Air

10

Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard and the

11

Reserves and the government civilians and family members

12

supporting them; and

13

WHEREAS, A large number of our armed forces are actively

engaged in the global war on terrorism; and

2

WHEREAS, More than 170,000 men and women of the armed forces

3

are currently deployed to combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan

4

to fight the global war on terrorism; and

5

WHEREAS, Our nation relies on the National Guard and other

6

reserve component forces like never before in our history, with

7

about 20% of the deployed troop strength coming from the

8

National Guard and the Reserves; and

9

WHEREAS, More than 500,000 members of the Reserves and the

10

National Guard have been called to active duty for the conflict

11

against Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001; and 

12

WHEREAS, This year's "Armed Forces Day" theme is "United In

13

Strength," and military units from all branches stationed in

14

Pennsylvania will be conducting an "Armed Forces Day" program on

15

May 15, 2010, on City Island in Harrisburg; and

16

WHEREAS, It is the intent of the House of Representatives to

17

recognize the men and women of our armed forces for their

18

dedicated service to this Commonwealth and our nation and

19

commend them especially for the outstanding performance of their

20

duties in Iraq and Afghanistan, in the global war on terrorism

21

and in response to natural disasters; therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

23

week of May 9 through 15, 2010, as "Armed Forces Week" in

24

Pennsylvania; and be it further

25

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the

26

citizens of this Commonwealth to observe May 15, 2010, as "Armed

27

Forces Day" in Pennsylvania.
