A RESOLUTION

Honoring the Pennsylvania Lung Cancer Partnership and

2

designating November 2012 as "Lung Cancer Awareness Month" in

3

Pennsylvania.

4

WHEREAS, The number of deaths due to lung cancer in the

5

United States is more than all those combined from colon,

6

breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers, making it the leading

7

cause of cancer deaths in this country; and

8

WHEREAS, The number of deaths due to lung cancer increased by

9

more than 4% between 1999 and 2008, going from 152,156 to

10

158,656; and

11

WHEREAS, While cigarette smoking is the primary cause of

12

almost 90% of lung cancer cases, exposure to radon is the second

13

leading cause of lung cancer deaths annually. Other factors

14

include exposure to cigarette smoke and occupational exposure to

15

carcinogens such as asbestos, uranium and coke; and

WHEREAS, According to the American Lung Association, an

2

estimated 160,340 people in the United States will succumb to

3

lung cancer in 2012 with an additional 226,160 new cases

4

projected to be diagnosed this year; and

5

WHEREAS, More than 373,000 Americans are living with lung

6

cancer, the majority of those cases having been diagnosed within

7

the last five years; and

8

WHEREAS, Even though more men are diagnosed with this disease

9

each year, the rate of new lung cancer cases over the last 33

10

years has dropped for men but has steadily risen for women at a

11

rate of 106%; and

12

WHEREAS, The lung cancer incidence rate for black men is 47%

13

higher than it is for white men even though their exposure to

14

cigarette smoke is approximately the same. Lung cancer incidence

15

rates for black women and white women are basically equal in

16

spite of data that indicates that more white women are cigarette

17

smokers; and

18

WHEREAS, In Pennsylvania, rates for lung cancer in 2008,

19

according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

20

were between 66.9 and 73.7 per 100,000 and the rate for deaths

21

was between 50.8 and 56.1 per 100,000; and

22

WHEREAS, The National Lung Cancer Partnership was established

23

in 2006, forming alliances with advocacy groups as well as

24

physicians and researchers in order to pursue its stated mission

25

to "decrease deaths due to lung cancer and to help patients live

26

longer and better through research, awareness and advocacy"; and

27

WHEREAS, In 2009, the Pennsylvania Lung Cancer Partnership

28

was established as the second State chapter of the National Lung

29

Cancer Partnership and since its inception, has formed

30

partnerships with the premier research and teaching facilities

located in this Commonwealth; and

2

WHEREAS, In keeping with its mission, the Pennsylvania Lung

3

Cancer Partnership hosts numerous educational forums for

4

patients, clinicians, researchers and the general public as well

5

as fundraising events to increase resources for research and

6

other initiatives; and

7

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Lung Cancer Partnership supports

8

the Young Investigator Research Grant program of the National

9

Partnership for Lung Cancer, which provides a total of $100,000

10

over a two-year period to lung cancer researchers. To date, more

11

than $2 million has been awarded in support of lung cancer

12

research through this project; therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge the

14

endeavors of the Pennsylvania Lung Cancer Partnership with its

15

focus on research as well as its efforts to improve the care

16

provided to those suffering from this horrible disease; and be

17

it further

18

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

19

work of the Pennsylvania Lung Cancer Partnership by designating

20

the month of November 2012 as "Lung Cancer Awareness Month" in

21

Pennsylvania.
