A RESOLUTION

Designating May 9 through 16, 2009, as "AmeriCorps Getting

2

Things Done Week" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps is a national system of service programs

4

that provides Americans an opportunity to serve the community in

5

a variety of areas; and

6

WHEREAS, During the week of may 9 through 16, 2009, we

7

recognize the work that is being performed in this Commonwealth

8

and throughout the country by countless community volunteers;

9

and

10

WHEREAS, In Pennsylvania more than 20,000 resident volunteers

11

have participated and received educational assistance as a

12

result of the AmeriCorps program; and

13

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps week is also a time to further promote

14

civic involvement; and

15

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps is an opportunity to make a big

16

difference in one's own life and in the lives of those around

us; and

2

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps is a chance to apply your skills and

3

ideals toward helping others and meeting critical needs in the

4

community; and

5

WHEREAS, Each year, AmeriCorps offers 75,000 opportunities

6

for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve through a

7

network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit

8

groups; and

9

WHEREAS, Whether one's service makes a community safer, gives

10

a child a second chance or helps protect the environment, those

11

who serve will be getting things done through AmeriCorps; and

12

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members address critical needs in

13

communities all across America; and

14

WHEREAS, This year AmeriCorps will provide more than 2,900

15

individuals the opportunity to provide intensive, results-driven

16

service to meet education, environmental, public safety and

17

other pressing needs in communities across Pennsylvania; and

18

WHEREAS, Other individuals will serve through AmeriCorps

19

VISTA, whose members help bring individuals and communities out

20

of poverty by serving full time to fight illiteracy, improve

21

health services, create businesses and increase housing

22

opportunities; and

23

WHEREAS, More than 40,000 people of all ages and backgrounds

24

are helping to meet local needs, strengthen communities and

25

increase civic engagement through 163 national service projects

26

across this Commonwealth. Serving with national and local

27

nonprofits, schools, faith-based organizations and other groups,

28

these citizens tutor and mentor children, coordinate

29

after-school programs, build homes, conduct neighborhood

30

patrols, restore the environment, respond to disasters, build

nonprofit capacity and recruit and manage volunteers; therefore

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 9 through 16, 2009,

4

as "AmeriCorps Getting Things Done Week" in Pennsylvania and

5

encourage all residents of this Commonwealth to recognize

6

AmeriCorps for its outstanding record of achievement.
