WHEREAS, Nell Burks Elementary School in McKinney is the | ||
first campus to be designated as a Healthy Zone School as part of | ||
the Healthy Zone School Recognition Program; and | ||
WHEREAS, Developed by the Cooper Institute in partnership | ||
with the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and the Texas Education | ||
Agency, the initiative uses evidence-based knowledge and best | ||
practices to assist schools in creating an optimal environment for | ||
promoting healthy behaviors; a total of nine schools nationwide | ||
will receive the award over the next three years; additionally, | ||
select schools that are working toward the goal of improving the | ||
health of their students, parents, and teachers with guidance from | ||
the Cooper Institute are recognized as Healthy Zone Schools--In | ||
Training; and | ||
WHEREAS, Burks Elementary achieved the designation by | ||
meeting certain established criteria, including encouraging 60 | ||
minutes of vigorous physical activity a day, promoting | ||
interscholastic and intramural sports, and providing nutritional | ||
options such as whole grains, fruit, and vegetables on the school | ||
menu; along with the recognition, the school receives a Healthy | ||
Zone banner and flag, $1,500 for physical education equipment, and | ||
funding for activity promotions; and | ||
WHEREAS, Distinguished as a champion in health, nutrition, | ||
and physical education, Burks Elementary is a leading example for | ||
other schools in its community, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor | ||
all those associated with the campus for their outstanding efforts; | ||
now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Nell Burks | ||
Elementary School on earning recognition as a Healthy Zone School | ||
and extend to the students, staff, faculty, and parents sincere | ||
best wishes for continued success; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Burks Elementary as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
