HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 215
Commending Rocktown History.

WHEREAS, Rocktown History, a distinguished historical society and museum formerly known as the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society, commemorates its 125th anniversary in 2024; and

WHEREAS, after several years of growing interest and nascent efforts by a formal committee to preserve local history by collecting various documents and relics, the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society held its first public meeting in March 1899; and

WHEREAS, in the 1940s, members of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society established a community historical museum, which was later located in the Warren-Sipe House in Harrisonburg from 1977 until 1993, until the organization was gifted the property in Dayton where the museum stands today; and

WHEREAS, Rocktown History maintains a collection of artifacts exemplifying facets of life in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County over the past 240 years, including family heirlooms, advertisements, industrial products, and more; and

WHEREAS, Rocktown History and its curators develop a number of exhibitions and events throughout the year to draw the public's attention to notable artifacts or stories from the region's history; and

WHEREAS, Rocktown History maintains an extensive genealogy library and other resources to facilitate the efforts of individuals interested in learning more about their family and the past; and

WHEREAS, Rocktown History has improved the quality of life in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County by providing residents with a place where they may learn more about the history of the region and reflect upon how their community has grown and transformed over time; and

WHEREAS, in the winter of 2023, Rocktown History opened a special exhibition, "A Tip of the Hat," to honor and remember local historians who have been vital to the organization's success since its founding; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Rocktown History on the occasion of its 125th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Rocktown History as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's history and its contributions to the Commonwealth.
