HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 592
Commending Chase City Lodge 119 AF&AM on the occasion of its 150th anniversary.

WHEREAS, Chase City Lodge 119 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons (AF&AM) celebrated the auspicious occasion of its 150th anniversary on December 12, 2010; and

WHEREAS, open to men of good moral character who believe in the existence of a Supreme Being, Freemasonry welcomes men without regard to race, religion, nationality, or social standing; and

WHEREAS, originally chartered as Meherrin Lodge 186, members of Chase City Lodge 119 AF&AM initially met at the home of brother W.L. French in Charlotte County, and elected as officers Worshipful Master Samuel G. Johnson, Senior Warden Bartley C. Smithson, and Junior Warden Robert S. Powell; and

WHEREAS, when a 1902 petition to the Grand Lodge of Virginia was granted, the lodge officially changed its name to Chase City Lodge 119 AF&AM; and

WHEREAS, following a devastating fire in 1903 that consumed the charter and the furniture, but spared the historical records of the lodge, members of Chase City Lodge 119 AF&AM dedicated their energies to refurbishing their meeting space, increasing their membership, and improving their community; and

WHEREAS, in 1959 Chase City Lodge 119 AF&AM purchased the present lodge building on the corner of 4th and Boyd Streets in Chase City; through the generous support of members, more than half the cost of the building was paid in one year, and the final payment was made on November 3, 1966; and

WHEREAS, on December 12, 2010, in a ceremony open to the public, Most Worshipful John Mason Chambliss, Jr., Grand Master of Masons in Virginia for 2011, presented a plaque to honor past achievements of Chase City Lodge 119 AF&AM; and

WHEREAS, Chase City Mayor J. Eddie Bratton presented Chase City Lodge 119 AF&AM with a proclamation declaring December 12, 2010, as Masonic History Day in Chase City; and

WHEREAS, Chase City Lodge 119 AF&AM will perpetuate its long and rich tradition of civic engagement, philanthropy, and upholding the venerated Masonic principles and values; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Chase City Lodge 119 AF&AM on the occasion of its 150th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Worshipful Master Jeffrey Lang and members of Chase City Lodge 119 AF&AM as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations for a memorable anniversary celebration and hopes for success in the lodge's future projects.
