15103139D WHEREAS, High Point Elementary School in Washington County was named a National Title I Distinguished School in Virginia for 2014 - 2015; and WHEREAS, High Point Elementary School is one of two schools in the Commonwealth to receive national recognition; it was honored for its successful two-year effort to close academic achievement gaps among student groups; and WHEREAS, the Virginia Board of Education selected High Point Elementary School for this honor from among 40 high-achieving Title I schools in the Commonwealth; Title I of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act funds programs that aim to raise the academic achievement of at-risk students; and WHEREAS, the Bristol-area school implemented a rigorous effort to improve its students' reading and math skills; parents, teachers, students, and volunteers pitched in, and Sherry King, principal of High Point Elementary School, also attributed the accomplishment to new instruction plans; and WHEREAS, when the honor was announced, the students and staff at High Point Elementary School held an impromptu celebration on December 11, 2014, complete with confetti, balloons, and dancing; and WHEREAS, Superintendent Brian C. Ratliff said that the honor was a well-deserved recognition for High Point Elementary School, whose academic ranking in the Commonwealth has increased significantly in the last two years; it is now one of the top 100 schools in Virginia; and WHEREAS, being selected a National Title I Distinguished School is a special occasion for Washington County and represents much hard work by the High Point Elementary School community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend High Point Elementary School for being named a National Title I Distinguished School in Virginia for 2014 - 2015; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sherry King, principal of High Point Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and admiration for the dedication and hard work of the school's students, faculty, staff, parents, and supporters to improve academic achievement. |
