SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 419
Celebrating the life of the Reverend Dr. Donald Lawrence Trent, Sr.

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Donald Lawrence Trent, Sr., a beloved pastor who faithfully served the congregation of Second Union Baptist Church in Goochland for 40 years, died on February 7, 2013; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Luther P. Jackson High School in Cumberland, Donald Trent proudly served his country in the United States Army and earned a bachelor's degree from Richmond Virginia Seminary, a master's degree from Fredericksburg Bible Institute and Seminary, and a doctorate from Faith International Bible College; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Trent's tenure at Second Union Baptist Church was marked by dynamic spiritual leadership that resulted in a membership whose faith and numbers grew under his inspired teaching; and

WHEREAS, under Reverend Trent's direction, Second Union Baptist Church established fulltime worship services and expanded its ministries to better serve the congregation and community; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Trent reached out to those in the community who were unable to attend services, establishing outreach visitation ministries to correctional facilities, nursing homes, and hospitals; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Trent oversaw numerous projects to expand and enhance the church building; and

WHEREAS, a respected member of the faith community, Reverend Trent was a charter member of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Goochland and served in numerous positions within the organization over the years; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Trent also served as president of the Beulah Baptist Sunday School Convention and as treasurer of the Slate River Baptist District Association; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Trent shared his spiritual insight and experience as a professor at Faith International Bible College; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Trent took an active role in community affairs as a member of the Goochland Branch of the NAACP, Progressive Action in the Community Coalition, and Rosenwald Restoration Committee and earned numerous awards and accolades for his community service; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Trent touched the lives of countless individuals over the course of his life and will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 40 years, Gloria; children, Donald, Montesa, and Stevie, and their families; numerous other family members and friends; and the congregation of Second Union Baptist Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired pastor and community leader, the Reverend Dr. Donald Lawrence Trent, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Reverend Dr. Donald Lawrence Trent, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
