A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that article X, section 4, of the Hawaii State Constitution provides, in pertinent part, "The State shall promote the study of Hawaiian culture, history and language."  In addition, article XV, section 4, of the Hawaii State Constitution establishes Hawaiian as one of two official languages of the State of Hawaii.  The legislature further finds that the Hawaii State Constitution is officially published in English.

     The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to the University of Hawaii to translate the Hawaii State Constitution into the Hawaiian language.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $           or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2017-2018 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 to translate the Hawaii State Constitution into the Hawaiian language.

     The sums appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on January 7, 2059.
