Bill Title: Creates the Expressway Safety Act. Provides that the Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority shall work together to conduct a program to increase the amount of cameras along expressways in Cook County. Provides that images from the cameras may be used to investigate offenses and detect roadway hazards, but not to enforce petty offenses. Provides that the program shall be funded by the Road Fund. Repeals the Act on July 1, 2023.

SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
New Act

Creates the Expressway Safety Act. Provides that the Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority shall work together to conduct a program to increase the amount of cameras along expressways in Cook County. Provides that images from the cameras may be used to investigate offenses and detect roadway hazards, but not to enforce petty offenses. Provides that the program shall be funded by the Road Fund. 1 AN ACT concerning transportation.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the
5Expressway Safety Act.
6 Section 5. Camera program.
7 (a) The Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of
8Transportation, and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority
9shall work together to conduct a program to increase the amount
10of cameras along expressways in Cook County.
11 (b) Images from the cameras may be used by law enforcement
12agencies in the investigation of offenses and to detect roadway
13hazards. Images from the cameras shall not be used to enforce
14petty offenses.
15 (c) Subject to appropriation, any funds needed to conduct
16the program shall be taken from the Road Fund.
17 Section 90. Repeal. This Act is repealed on July 1, 2023.
