STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 4008 2019-2020 Regular Sessions IN SENATE February 25, 2019 ___________ Introduced by Sen. MAYER -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to encouraging secondary schools to have student governments if feasible The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Subdivision 9 of section 2503 of the education law is 2 amended by adding a new paragraph c to read as follows: 3 c. Student organizations shall include student governments in all 4 secondary schools consisting of peer elected students as long as it is 5 feasible. Each secondary school shall have a student government unless 6 the board of education finds by duly noticed resolution that it is 7 infeasible to have a student government for the following year and such 8 resolution cannot cover more than one school year. 9 § 2. Subdivision 15 of section 2554 of the education law is amended by 10 adding a new paragraph f to read as follows: 11 f. Student organizations shall include student governments in all 12 secondary schools consisting of peer elected students as long as it is 13 feasible. Each secondary school shall have a student government unless 14 the board of education finds by duly noticed resolution that it is 15 infeasible to have a student government for the following year and such 16 resolution cannot cover more than one school year. 17 § 3. This act shall take effect on the first of September next 18 succeeding the date on which it shall have become a law.
