HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 59
Commending Doretha E. Moody.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 9, 2012

WHEREAS, Doretha E. Moody ably represented the Fourth District on the Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors for eight years, until December 31, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of Dinwiddie County, Doretha Moody graduated from Southside High School and attended Virginia State College (now Virginia State University) and Richard Bland College; and

WHEREAS, before assuming elected office, Doretha Moody first worked in the private sector; she was an insurance agent for five years, where she was the only black person and the only woman in the company's Petersburg office; and

WHEREAS, Doretha Moody spent 30 years working at the Southside Virginia Training Center (SVTC) and retired as supervisor of the human service care workers; her decision to become an authorized representative for three residents of the center is evidence of her continued strong commitment to helping others; and

WHEREAS, Doretha Moody was employed at the DeWitt Post Office after retiring from the SVTC; there she became the first black woman to serve as officer in charge of the DeWitt facility, a position she held for three years, and in which she got to know and become friends with her neighbors and future constituents; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure on the Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors, Doretha Moody was chair of the board for two years; she also served for six years on the Crater Planning District Commission and was chair for two years; and

WHEREAS, as a member of the Community Policy and Management Team, the Dinwiddie County Task Force on Gang Prevention, and the Tri-Cities Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Doretha Moody brought a wealth of experience enhanced by her faith, her caring approach to others, and her deep commitment to the people of Dinwiddie County; and

WHEREAS, a small-business entrepreneur, Doretha Moody owns and operates E&M Residential, LLC, a home for individuals with developmental disabilities, where she daily provides compassionate care to the people in her charge; and

WHEREAS, Doretha Moody stays busy with many interests and activities; she is a greeter and preschool teacher at West End Baptist Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That a respected, admired, and compassionate public servant, Doretha E. Moody, hereby be commended; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Doretha E. Moody as an expression of the House of Delegates' appreciation and admiration for her unwavering care and service to others, especially to the people of Dinwiddie County.
