WHEREAS, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club, a noble and distinguished civic organization serving the community of Weyers Cave and beyond through a number of programs and initiatives, celebrates its 85th anniversary on April 13, 2024; and
WHEREAS, with a generous donation from the Houff family, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club established the Weyers Cave Ruritan Park, a 25-acre park featuring a walking trail, athletic fields, a playground, and other amenities for the community to enjoy; and
WHEREAS, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club spearheaded the creation of the Weyers Cave Community Center, completed in 1994, which provides a welcoming place for people to gather for recreation, classes, meetings, parties, and more; and
WHEREAS, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club held its 21st annual American Red Cross summer blood drive on July 29, 2023, greatly aiding area hospitals in their efforts to address the medical needs of their patients; and
WHEREAS, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club fosters goodwill and festive cheer during the holiday season each year by offering a Breakfast with Santa event that attracts hundreds of children and their families; and
WHEREAS, in its early years, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club encouraged the health and well-being of Weyers Cave residents by funding the installation of lights at a local ballpark; the organization has continued this project over the years through its support of local athletic leagues and youth activities and its annual softball tournament; and
WHEREAS, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club raises funds for its service projects by selling barbecue chicken and pork, a culinary treat beloved by the community, as well as by hosting entertaining dinners and concerts; and
WHEREAS, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club strives to ensure no individual or family goes without by actively contributing to the Verona Community Food Pantry, which serves nearly 1,000 people per month in the Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro areas; and
WHEREAS, through visionary leadership and the indefatigable efforts of its volunteer members, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club has helped to make Weyers Cave a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club hereby be commended on the occasion of its 85th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the organization's history and its legacy of service.
