Senate Concurrent Resolution 558

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION SALUTING FORMER UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI REBEL QUARTERBACK ELISHA (ELI) MANNING FOR WINNING THE SUPER BOWL XLVI CHAMPIONSHIP AND EARNING MOST VALUABLE PLAYER HONORS.

     ELI

NEW YORK                          NEW ENGLAND

 GIANTS       SUPER BOWL XLVI      PATRIOTS

   21                                17

WHEREAS, Eli Manning is "The Man" in the NFL after beating Tom Brady and leading the New York Giants to a 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots on February 5, 2012, in Super Bowl XLVI played in the house his older brother Peyton built, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana; and

WHEREAS, just as the former Ole Miss star did four years ago when the Giants ruined New England's perfect season, he guided them 88 yards to the decisive touchdown, in a decisive 4th quarter comeback.  With New York's 21-17 conquest of New England in Super Bowl XLVI, Manning has now beaten Brady three consecutive times in the past five seasons, leading extremely late fourth-quarter game-winning touchdown drives on each occasion.  Twice those victories made Manning's Giants the kings of the football world; and

WHEREAS, it is a select and "ELITE" club Most Valuable Player Eli Manning joined in Super Bowl XLVI, as quarterbacks with multiple Super Bowl wins have a cache all their own in NFL history.  This victory put him on the road to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Seven of the 11 members of the Two-Ring-Or-More Club are already in the Hall of Fame, those being Montana, Bradshaw, Starr, Griese, Aikman, Elway and Staubach, and that is the threshold that Manning just cleared with what could be his defining victory; and

WHEREAS, Eli Manning won his second Super Bowl MVP Award.  He opened the game by becoming the first quarterback to complete his first nine attempts in a Super Bowl, and he finished the job by directing the nine-play, 88-yard touchdown drive that put New York ahead with 57 seconds left.  He completed 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards.  In two fourth-quarters of two Super Bowls, against Bill Belichick defenses, he has completed 19 of 27 passes for 270 yards and 14 first downs.  He threw for 1,219 yards, nine touchdowns and just one interception in four playoff victories in the 2011-2012 season.  He threw 98 passes in the National Football Conference Championship and the Super Bowl without a single interception, and Eli is always - always - the first to deflect credit for victory to his teammates; and

WHEREAS, "Eli is the best quarterback in the National Football League, hands down," said Giants running back Brandon Jacobs, flushed with victory after New York's thrilling win over a New England team that won four more games than the Giants did in the regular season.  The highlight of Manning's game was once again a long-bomb on a fourth-quarter pass that he completed to a reserve Giants receiver, sparking New York's game-winning touchdown drive.  Playing the role of David Tyree this time was Mario Manningham, who hauled in Manning's picture-perfect 38-yard strike on the first snap of New York's nine-play, 88-yard drive.  It was a great catch and even a better throw, and in one fell swoop seemed to signal that the Giants would not be stopped against a Patriots team that once again was favored to beat them on the game's grandest stage; and

WHEREAS, following his senior season, Eli was named "Offensive Player of the Game" of the 2004 SBC Cotton Bowl Classic.  He also earned First Team All-American honors as well as being named to First Team All-SEC.  Eli was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2004 National Football League draft, the highest selection ever for any Ole Miss player.  Led by Eli Manning's heroics, the 2007 Giants became the first NFC wild-card team to win a Super Bowl; and

WHEREAS, Ole Miss football has a tradition of sending players to the New York Giants, highlighted by the career of legendary Ole Miss and Giant Quarterback Charlie Connerly, and now by legendary Ole Miss and Giant Quarterback Eli Manning; and

WHEREAS, the son of former Ole Miss famed quarterback, Archie Manning, and brother of the Indianapolis Colts quarterback, Peyton Manning, Eli has continued the long-standing family tradition of athletic excellence; and

WHEREAS, Eli Manning and his wife, Abby, have supported many worthy causes and have made a strong commitment to the health and education of young people in Mississippi.  They've made a pledge to raise $2.5 Million for the Eli Manning Children's Clinics at the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children in Jackson, Mississippi, and they've also donated $1 Million to start the Ole Miss Opportunity Scholarship Program, which helps children in Mississippi with special financial needs to have the opportunity to attend college.  Manning has served as a member of President Bush's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and is active with many other organizations such as the March of Dimes and the American Red Cross.  His commitment to volunteerism and national service is very impressive and worthy of high praise; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the outstanding talents and landmark accomplishment in the National Football League by a remarkable athlete, whose skills and execution before a national television audience has brought great honor and pride to his family, his university and to the State of Mississippi.  You really can't spell elite without the letters

E-L-I:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate former University of Mississippi "Rebel" Quarterback Elisha (Eli) Manning for winning the Super Bowl XLVI Championship on Sunday, February 5, 2012, and for earning Most Valuable Player honors, and extend our heartiest wishes for continued success in his future professional sports endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Eli Manning and his wife, Abby, forwarded to the University of Mississippi and be made available to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
